STORY BLOCKADES
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition - https://youtu.be/1ByOi9JJuDw
This game really doesn't pull any punches.
One critical thing about Xenoblade games is that you generally get experience for whatever it is you're doing: exploration, quests, or (obviously) combat. However, just like in Xenoblade 1, this game has so many quests that each really doesn't give much in the way of rewards. I hope side story quests are the exception, but even then, that doesn't help much if I can't finish the first one! I have no idea what caused all my health to drain instantly in that last fight. I think I'll do a little more exploration and then try it again.
We haven't met all the story characters yet at this point, but we do have our full "main party" now. No, Tatsu doesn't ever actually fight. That marks the only Nopon party member in any of the games that never picks up a weapon―despite the fact that he's carrying Biters on his backpack! Why does he even have them? Maybe he meant to sell them? But he's not much of a merchant, either. As far as I recall, he's just there for everyone to antagonize. To be fair to the rest of the party, he's a freeloader.
As far as I recall, this story has ten chapters, but as each is initiated from the same spot, you have other requirements than "reach the story location" to start the next chapter. Generally, it's to reach a certain character level and exploration percentage. Similarly, you will never simply stumble across story markers while exploring unless you have an active story quest. If you do find a relevant object, it will have none of the triggers associated with the story event. (Yes, that "significant object" I swam past was a piece of the Lifehold. But that won't come up for quite some time, even though I'll be finding those things all over the place just randomly.) I don't intend to make use of the Follow Ball too much, but at these low levels, I'd really rather avoid dying to things I just come across while looking for the path forward. Maybe when I'm closer to about levels 40-60 I can ditch it.
Oh, and those squad missions are a lot less formal this time around, as far as I can tell. Maybe the more formal ones simply haven't shown up yet as an option. I'll take the free stuff I can get passively since it's there, though.
