Even when he's present, Mario can't keep Peach from getting kidnapped.
As I said last week, I was getting a little tired of puzzles, so I decided (with help from chat) to jump over to Mario. These games have puzzles, but way, way easier ones. Also I've already played most of the games, so the puzzles should be more in the realm of remembering the solution than solving it all over again. Though as you can see at the start of this video, I haven't exactly done every puzzle in this game before.
The plot starts off with Bowser kidnapping Peach from her castle (a pretty consistent plot point across most Mario titles), though this time, Mario is actually present. However, he's struck with a case of Cutscene Incompetence and loses pretty much instantly. We'll get Bowser back for the boomerang hat trick later. Lucky us, the "artifact" that Bowser took from the Cap Kingdom was actually the sister of another citizen, and these citizens are pretty OP when they have someone like Mario helping them out. Throw a cap on anyone or anything and Mario can temporarily possess them; the form lasts until he uses a launching ability (as for chain chomps and some later objects) or either Mario or the host perishes. Or, of course, you can just exit early by hitting a crouch button.
I've already mentioned it several times, but those giant gray blocks are in every kingdom (one per kingdom) and they have a whole host of power moons inside, which scatter every which way when you open the blocks. You can't open them until after you beat the game, so there's not a lot of point to me exploring every nook and cranny of the kingdom right now. We can come back to that later when it's actually possible to grab everything. If you're wondering what happened in Sand Kingdom, then, well, that central area is very dense with moons even before the gray block opens. I just sorta took a chain to every location on it before I got back on track.
In total, there are 880 "unique" power moons. The "All Moons" category on Speedrun.com used to be called "All Unique Moons," because after beating the game you can just buy infinite moons from the yellow coin shop, 100 coins a pop. So the counter goes to 999. In order to verify that I'm getting the actual 880, I'm only going to buy one from each shop (since that's what actually counts) until I have 880. Then I'll buy the extras. There is a reward for getting 999, so I figure I'll go ahead and get it.
